Here are some of the best stiff neck relief and remedies.

  1. Get a deep tissue massage. When you sleep in a strange position, it can cause the muscle and tendons to knot and tighten. This is the reason why you may wake up and not be able to turn your head. A stiff neck is almost always caused by either a pulled muscle or some kind of knot in the tendons. A massage therapist will be able to work the muscle until it becomes loose again. It’s one of the best ways to get stiff neck relief. When you visit the therapist, ask them to focus on your neck, they’ll know exactly what to do.
  1. Slowly roll your head in a circular motion. Another way to find stiff neck relief is to slowly roll your head and neck around in a circular motion.  Take your time and go very slowly and gently. Be careful not to go too fast, because this can worsen the stiffness. Doing these head and neck exercises will allow you to slowly stretch out the neck until you find a little more mobility. It may take a few days to heal from a stiff neck, but doing these exercises is a great way to speed up the process.
  1. Place hot and cold packs on your neck. If the pain from your pulled muscle is particularly severe, you may consider using cold and hot packs on your neck. This technique can work wonders at not only soothing the discomfort, but also loosening the muscles and tendons in your neck, providing you with stiff neck relief.

One way to do this is by soaking a soft cloth in warm water and then placing it on your neck. You can also do the same with cold water. In fact, alternating between hot and cold can increase the healing power of this stiff neck remedy.  Usually, you’ll start with warm compresses and then use cold compresses later.

  1. Take a warm bath. When you take a bath, find some way to rest your head comfortably. Avoid holding up your neck. You may consider investing in a head pillow that you can use while taking a bath. Most of these pillows come with suction cups attached so you can keep the pillow where you need it. By submerging your neck in the warm water, you can get stiff neck relief and speed up healing.
  1. Rub a specialized muscle balm on your neck. There are many ointments, muscle rubs, and balms that you can purchase from your local pharmacy. These can provide stiff neck relief. Most of these muscle balms can be rubbed directly on the skin. These can help the muscles and tendons relax. If your neck is particularly tight and painful, you may find an incredible amount of relief from this method.
  1. Take an anti-inflammatory medication. There is a good chance that you are also experiencing stiffness in your neck as a result of inflammation.  Reducing the inflammation will give you much needed stiff neck relief and it will also give you more mobility.  In order to address the inflammation problem, talk to your healthcare provider about the option of taking one of the many over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications that are available.
  1. Try not to make any sudden movements with your head. The more you twist, pull and jerk your neck, the worse the pain and neck stiffness will be. If your neck is very sore, make sure that you go out of your way to keep it as still as possible. If you have to go to work or run errands, consider getting a brace for your neck that will limit mobility.
  1. Visit a chiropractor. A chiropractor can provide you with nearly instant stiff neck relief.  If you are prone to neck stiffness, you may want to set up regular visits to a chiropractor, especially if the pain is getting worse.  A chiropractor may be the only one that has the ability to work out some of the particularly tough kinks in your neck. A chiropractor will be able to adjust the muscles in your neck, which can help alleviate some of the tension that is building up.
  1. Sleep with extra support. Nighttime stiff neck relief is very simple. If you have a stiff neck, you can use an extra pillow to support your neck while you sleep. If you want to increase the support, try sleeping on your back – at least until the pain subsides.

In fact, if you have chronic neck stiffness and pain, you may want to invest in an adjustable bed. Adjustable beds allow you to fine-tune the angle of the head of the bed to provide the most support.

     10. Acupuncture.  Another stiff neck remedy that can truly work wonders is acupuncture. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing aches and pains. Many people find that after just one visit, they experience stiff neck relief so it’s well worth looking into. Make sure though, that you find a specialized acupuncturist to get the best results.

Unfortunately, neck pain and stiffness is a common problem and there are many remedies. Thankfully, in most cases, neck stiffness is not a sign of a more serious problem. However,  if your neck stiffness does not go away, contact a doctor. The last thing you want is to potentially disregard something as insignificant when it is serious. At the end of the day, though, trying any of the aforementioned remedies and methods is a great place to start. Using just one of these techniques assures you that there is a good chance of experiencing stiff neck relief and that all of your neck stiffness will subside in a couple of days.
