Since heartburn, a common ailment, can be very unpleasant, people are always looking for tips to relieve heartburn. Heartburn is triggered by a backup of stomach acid. It feels as if someone has lit a small bonfire in your chest. In addition to getting that burning feeling in the chest, heartburn may also cause chronic sore throat and cough.

There are several medications to relieve heartburn. But often more effective—and with fewer side effects are natural heartburn remedies and changes in your lifestyle.

Antacids may be taken to relieve heartburn occasionally. There is an endless array of prescription and over-the-counter choices that will relieve heartburn. Surgery is also an option to prevent reflux and heartburn. However, the main goal should be to get at the why of heartburn to avoid it rather than treat it.

Calcium is a natural heartburn remedy. Most over-the-counter antacids contain it. Antacids should not be taken habitually. Iberogast is a product made of nine different herbs:

  • Angelica
  • Caraway
  • Clown’s mustard plant
  • German chamomile
  • Greater celandine
  • Lemon balm
  • Licorice
  • Milk thistle
  • Peppermint

Studies have shown that Iberogast may reduce heartburn. The most effective of the above herbs is unknown as they have never been tested in isolation.

Melatonin, a sleep aid, may help relieve heartburn. Research is inconclusive as to how this relieves heartburn.

Herbal remedy or supplements should be used with caution when it comes to relieving heartburn. These heartburn remedies can have serious side effects. They can also interact with medications.

Some people feel that drinking a glass of milk can relieve heartburn. Milk may provide a buffer for stomach acid. However, the butterfat in milk may cause the stomach to produce more acid.

Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva. This act is an acid buffer. Chewing gum causes more frequent swallowing. This pushes heartburn-causing acids back out of the esophagus. Choose sugar-free gum to protect your teeth.

Cut down on food consumption – if you eat less and consume your food more slowly, you are less likely to get heartburn. One of the tips to avoid heartburn is to put your food on a smaller plate. The key here is to eat more frequently in smaller portions.

Stop, sit down and eat – If you habitually gulp your food down or eat on the run, heartburn comes as no surprise. Gulping down your food without chewing it can lead to indigestion and heartburn.

Foods that have high fat content stay in your stomach longer and often cause heartburn. Avoid eating a lot of fried foods and cut back on the portion sizes of high fat foods.

Consider preparation alternatives. You don’t have to give up your favorite foods but you may have to think about how to prepare them differently. Instead or breading or frying foods, try broiling, baking, steaming, grilling, or roasting to avoid heartburn. Cut back on red meats and processed foods. Choose lean, skinless meats.

Shun acidic foods – Foods high in acid like tomatoes, salsa, citrus fruits, and vinegar can trigger heartburn. A good tip is to eat these foods in combination with other less acidic foods, to eat them cooked, or to avoid them entirely if they give you heartburn.

Avoid drinks that cause heartburn. Foods aren’t the only cause of heartburn. Drinks that can trigger heartburn include coffee, tea, sodas, carbonated drinks, citrus and vegetable juices, and alcoholic drinks. Try drinking herbal teas with no caffeine or water instead.

Chocoholics Beware! Chocolate contains caffeine and thus may trigger heartburn. Chocolate also contains fats. Limit intake to a nibble or cut out completely.

Exercise away heartburn. There are exercises to relieve heartburn. Some of them are even fun. Here are three suggested activities to relieve heartburn:

Try running up the stairs. Any aerobic exercise can be helpful in relieving heartburn. Running up the stairs or skipping requires no special equipment.

Go jogging or take the dog for a brisk walk. This exercise will alleviate your heartburn and make both you and your pet healthier. Roller blading or bike riding are also good aerobic exercises that can help relieve heartburn.

Dancing as another form of exercise can also be a good way to reduce heartburn. If you start to feel the symptoms of heartburn put on a CD or dance DVD and shake your booty.
